Two injured in Raichur in clash over church, temple location

Raichur: A dispute over the location of a church and an Anjaneya temple led to a clash and stone-pelting at Bichali Camp in Raichur taluk on Wednesday, August 12, leaving two people injured.
The disagreement had reportedly been continuing for nearly two months over the land where the two religious structures have been built in a rehabilitation area. Although residents have not yet moved to the rehabilitation site, the issue surrounding the location of the church and temple has created tension among villagers, Siasat Daily reported.
The situation escalated on Tuesday, August 11, following an argument between two groups. Stones were allegedly thrown during the confrontation, resulting in injuries to two people. They were taken to the RIMS Hospital in Raichur for treatment.
Authorities had previously held a peace meeting in an effort to resolve the dispute and prevent further tension. Following the latest clash, the administration imposed prohibitory orders in Bichali and Bichali Camp.
Raichur Sub-Divisional Assistant Commissioner Dr Hampanna Sajjan issued the restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. The order came into effect at 6 pm on August 11 and will remain in force until 6.30 am on August 18.
Raichur Superintendent of Police Dr Arunangshu Giri said the immediate dispute was connected to an Anjaneya idol situated near the church. He said the idol was located around 50 metres from the church and that an argument had taken place between some people associated with the church and devotees of Anjaneya. A case has been registered at Yeragera police station, he added.
The SP said a Deputy Superintendent of Police-rank officer had been assigned to investigate the incident.
Police and revenue officials are keeping a close watch on the area, while security arrangements have been strengthened to prevent any further confrontation. Residents have been asked to cooperate with the authorities and help maintain communal harmony.
The administration is expected to assess the situation before deciding on further action once the prohibitory order expires.
