Telangana records highest crimes against women in southern India: NCRB 2024

Telangana tops the southern states in crimes against women, according to NCRB data for 2024, even as the national figure saw a slight decline. Telangana recorded 24,495 cases, ahead of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, while Uttar Pradesh remained the state with the highest overall number of cases in the country.

India reported 4.41 lakh crimes against women in 2024, a 1.5 per cent drop from the previous year, with the crime rate also falling from 66.2 to 64.6 per lakh women. At the same time, crimes against children rose steadily to 1,87,702 in 2024.

Telangana leads south

Telangana reported the highest number of crimes against women among southern states in 2024, with 24,495 cases. The figure marked an increase from 23,678 in 2023 and 22,066 in 2022.

Among other southern states, Andhra Pradesh reported 19,952 cases, Karnataka 19,945, Kerala 15,037 and Tamil Nadu 11,363.

National trend

Across India, 4,41,000 crimes against women were registered in 2024, showing a marginal 1.5 per cent decline from 2023. The crime rate per lakh women also fell slightly, from 66.2 to 64.6.

Cruelty by husband or his relatives remained the largest category, accounting for 14,376 cases, or 28.4 per cent of all crimes against women. Kidnapping and abduction of women was the second-largest category, with 10,142 cases.

Rape and dowry deaths

India recorded 29,536 rape cases in 2024. In southern states, Telangana again topped the list with 1,148 cases, followed by Kerala with 940, Karnataka with 671, Andhra Pradesh with 441 and Tamil Nadu with 419.

Dowry deaths stood at 5,737 nationwide, with Telangana reporting 144, the highest among southern states. Karnataka recorded 112, Andhra Pradesh 71, Tamil Nadu 7 and Kerala 1.

Crimes against children rise

Crimes against children continued to rise sharply, increasing from 1,62,449 in 2022 to 1,77,335 in 2023 and 1,87,702 in 2024. In southern India, Tamil Nadu reported the highest number at 10,046 cases, followed by Karnataka with 9,568, Telangana with 6,767, Kerala with 5,929 and Andhra Pradesh with 2,633.
