Kolkata: Humayun Kabir, the Trinamool Congress MLA from Bharatpur Assembly constituency in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district of West Bengal, whose suspension from the party was officially announced on Thursday, has stated that he will resign as MLA by December 8 and launch his own political party on December 22.

Speaking shortly after the suspension was announced by West Bengal Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, Kabir said, “I will be resigning as the MLA of Bharatpur either on Friday or on Monday. Thereafter, I will be announcing my new political party on December 22. My schedule on December 6 regarding laying the foundation stone of Babri Mosque at Beldanga in Murshidabad district will remain the same.”

Kabir also claimed that he learned about his suspension through the media and had not received any official communication from the party leadership. “No one from the party had officially intimated me. Neither have I received any written communication in the matter from anyone in the party. I have a lot of things to say. I will say that only after I officially receive the suspension letter from the party,” he added.

The suspension was announced on the day when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was scheduled to address an anti-Special Intensive Revision (SIR) rally at Baharampur in Murshidabad.

Firhad Hakim, while announcing Kabir’s suspension, alleged that by declaring the construction of the Babri Mosque, Kabir was attempting to reignite memories of the original Babri Mosque at Ayodhya. He further claimed that the BJP had some role in Kabir’s recent activities and suggested that the party was trying to stir divisive politics by keeping Kabir in the spotlight.

Kabir had been cautioned several times in the past by Trinamool Congress for alleged anti-party activities and making public comments that embarrassed the leadership. His suspension from the party was officially declared on Thursday.
