Students in Karnataka Education Minister’s home district clean school toilets

Bengaluru: Parents protested after some students in Karnataka's Shivamogga were seen in a video cleaning and scrubbing school toilets.

Shivamogga is the home district of the state Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, NDTV reported.

The Block Education Officer has filed a report on the third incident in the southern state this month.

Although it took place last week, the video of the incident has only emerged now.

The headmistress, however, claimed that the BDA students were only asked to pour water and not to clean the toilets.

Earlier, parents and activists protested outside a school in capital city Bengaluru’s Andrahalli area after students were forced to clean toilets last week. Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa called the incident ‘deplorable’.

"... there is no doubt we will take the strictest action as per law. Further, I will ensure such incidents don't repeat... and will ensure all necessary action is taken by our department," he was then quoted as saying.

Bangarappa, who escaped a car crash last night, has not responded to the 'toilet-cleaning incident' in his district.

Following the Bengaluru incident, the Education Department suspended the school headmaster.

‘NSS and Seva Dal camps use to give train kids in cleaning garden or planting saplings but we didn't give permission for children to clean the toilets,’ Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reportedly said.

Several visuals emerged previously showed ‘toilet-cleaning incidents’ including students cleaning septic tank with their bare hands, according to reports.
