SKM observes Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Diwas to mark birth anniversary of peasant leader
text_fieldsThe Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) is observing Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Diwas on Wednesday. The day marks the birth anniversary of peasant leader Chhotu Ram.
Born on November 24, 1881, Sir Chhotu Ram played a key role in empowering farmers in the pre-independence era under British rule. He got pro-farmers law enacted and was regarded as a messiah of peasants.
SKM is an umbrella body of several farmers' unions protesting against the three controversial farm laws passed by the Centre last year. As the first anniversary of the protests draws near, Indian ex-pats will organize events in the UK, US, France, Austria, Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands on Friday in support of the farmers' protests. Several of the organization's leaders will also join a Maha Dharna in Hyderabad on November 25 to mark the anniversary of the farmers' protests at Delhi borders.
Though PM Modi announced the suspension of the three laws, farmer leaders have maintained that their protests would continue until the three laws are formally repealed in Parliament. The protests for a statutory guarantee of MSP and withdrawal of the Electricity Amendment Bill would continue, they added. The SKM also wrote to the PM on Monday seeking immediate resumption of talks with the government over these demands.
