RG Kar case: CBI replaces investigating officer in fresh probe

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is conducting a fresh probe into the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor at Kolkata's state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024 following an order of the Calcutta High Court, has replaced the investigating officer in the case.
The previous investigating officer, Seema Pahuja, has been relieved of the responsibility of investigating the case after the victim's parents alleged that she had conducted a lackadaisical probe and demanded her removal.
Pahuja has been replaced by Sandeepani Garg, who was present during a hearing before the trial court at Sealdah in central Kolkata on Thursday.
The CBI also submitted a status report to the court on Thursday detailing the progress of the investigation.
Garg met the victim's mother, who was also present at the court, and requested her to have faith in the investigation being conducted by the central agency.
The CBI counsel informed the court that around 1,000 pages of documents related to the case are currently being examined as part of the fresh investigation. The statements of the victim's parents have also been recorded, the counsel added.
The body of the junior doctor was recovered from a seminar room on the R.G. Kar hospital premises on the morning of August 8, 2024. She had allegedly been raped and murdered the previous night.
The Kolkata Police initially arrested civic volunteer Sanjay Roy in connection with the incident. Later, following an order from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI took over the investigation. However, the central agency did not arrest anyone else suspected of involvement in the crime.
The trial court subsequently convicted Roy, the sole accused, and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
However, the victim's parents remained dissatisfied with the investigation and claimed that several other people were involved in the crime.
Earlier this year, the Calcutta High Court ordered a fresh investigation into the case.
