Rahul Gandhi calls out Centre for raising taxes, Alleges cutting taxes for "friends"

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Centre is imposing high taxes on commoners and cutting taxes for its friends. He tweeted "the 'natural course' of action for suit-boot-loot sarkar."
He also shared a graph showing that the government is earning more revenue from taxes common people pay and less from corporations. The image showed the rise and fall of taxes over the years. It showed that tax paid by people has gone up and tax paid by corporations has gone down.
The percentage of the tax collected by the government was also noted in the tweet. According to the graph, in 2010, the revenue collected through the tax on corporations was over 40% against 24% revenue from the tax on people. In 2021, the numbers have reversed. The revenue collected from the tax on corporations has come down to around 24% against 48% from people.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also shared a letter from the Rajasthan chief minister opposing the hike in GST on essential items. He was responding to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's claim that no state had opposed the GST on food items at the GST Council meeting.
Sharing the letter, he said: "The finance minister has been claiming that in the meetings of the GST Council, the states did not oppose the imposition of GST on food items. This is a letter written to him by the chief minister of Rajasthan on 05.08.2022, which refutes her claims." Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot has requested the finance minister to reconsider her decision.
