Shopian: In yet another attack on security forces in Jammu and Kashmir, militants have Shot and injured a police officer who was returning home after visiting a mosque for prayers in the Amishijipora area of the Shopian district, Kashmir Police tweeted. The injured policeman has been identified as ASI Shabir Ahmad.

ASI Ahmad has been shifted to a hospital in Srinagar where his condition is stable.

The area, where the incident took place, has been cordoned off by security forces to nab the attackers, they said, adding a case has been registered and investigation started. On Saturday, militants had killed 53-year-old policeman, Ali Mohammad Ganie, in south Kashmir's Hassanpora Bijbehara. A day earlier, another policeman had escaped unhurt in an attack in the Batmaloo area of Srinagar, the Hindustan Times reported.

Last year, 20 cops were killed in Kashmir either during encounters or targeted killings. In January, security forces have killed 21 militants, including eight Pakistani militants, in 11 encounters.

In response to militant activity, a joint endeavour by the Kahsmir Police, army and other security forces was launched, which managed to eliminate five terrorists in total during two separate encounters in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on January 12. Selection Grade Constable Rohit Chhib was killed in the ensuing gunfight and three Army personnel were injured.

According to the police, Wani was involved in an attack on a policeman, Mushtaq Waggay, in Pulwama district on December 19.

Security forces in Kashmir have killed 14 suspected militants in eight gunfights in the first 12 days of January, according to a report by NDTV.
