Imphal: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Manipur in mid-September, more than two years after the northeastern state was first gripped by ethnic violence between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, according to a Deccan Herald report.

The prime minister is likely to visit Imphal and Churachandpur, where he will meet families displaced by the conflict. The state has been under President’s rule since May 2023, when widespread violence, arson and clashes broke out, resulting in heavy loss of life, destruction of property and mass displacement.

During the same tour, scheduled between September 12 and 14, Modi is also set to visit Assam and Mizoram to inaugurate a series of infrastructure projects.

The Opposition has repeatedly criticized the prime minister for not visiting Manipur despite the prolonged unrest. On Friday, as Modi departed for China, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused him of ignoring the crisis.

“Even as the PM jets off abroad, the long-suffering people of Manipur are still awaiting his visit there to heal the wounds of May 2023. But the PM simply and stubbornly refuses to engage with the state, its political parties and leaders, civil society organizations, and the people themselves. He has simply washed his hands off Manipur – which stands as a tragic testimony to the blundering of the Union Home Minister,” Ramesh posted on X.
