Bhubaneswar: In the Barabati region of Jajpur district, on Monday evening, at least 5 people travelling in a bus from Puri to Kolkata crashed from a flyover on National Highway-16. Several injured people were transferred to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

Police, officials from the transport department, and members of the Odisha Fire and Emergency Service hurried to the scene in order to save lives. At approximately nine o'clock at night, the bus driver may have lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the overpass and crash onto the service road.

Travellers with minor injuries were sent to the Badachana Community Health Centre, while those with major injuries were transferred to SCB MCH.

In order to transport the injured passengers from the scene, the district administration dispatched 16 ambulances and two advanced life-saving ambulances right away, the New Indian Express reported.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed sorrow over the incident and promised free medical care for those hurt as well as Rs 3 lakh ex-gratia for each deceased person's family. “Five persons have perished so far. Jajpur Collector and SP are on the spot to supervise the rescue operation," said a senior police officer.

According to the police, the victims' identities are being verified. The majority of the passengers, who are thought to be tourists, might be residents of neighbouring West Bengal.

The sources claimed that overspeeding might have caused the disaster. According to authorities, five cranes were used to lift the wrecked bus off the road.
