Jamia condemns campus vandalism by masked protesters, raises safety concerns
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday criticised the destruction of university property during protests on campus, raising concerns over security after masked individuals allegedly attempted to gather support from students at a boys’ hostel.
The university said protesters and some local residents damaged gates and boundary walls, brought down Gate 4C and attacked the CCTV control room and cameras, including their connections. Footage circulating on social media reportedly shows the extent of the damage, with iron rods, hammers and other tools allegedly used during the incident on October 27.
The administration said the vandalism began soon after another round of talks between protesting students and faculty members. It was the seventh attempt by the university to engage with the protesters, according to its statement.
The university also alleged that female faculty members, hostel wardens and the provost faced threats when they tried to persuade female protesters to engage in dialogue. It said the incidents had raised serious questions about the safety of students and staff, as well as the security of campus facilities.
The latest violence follows several incidents over the past week involving attempts to breach or damage university gates and boundary walls. The institution had shifted to online classes under a notification issued on October 24.
Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel remain deployed outside the campus.
