India reaffirms continued assistance to Sri Lanka, focusing on bilateral ties

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar assured further assistance to Sri Lanka amidst its ongoing economic challenges.
Speaking through a video link to members of the Sri Lanka-India Parliamentary Friendship Association, Jaishankar emphasised India's commitment to enhancing the relationship between the two nations. He said, "India will continue to provide developmental assistance to Sri Lanka in every possible area."
Gopal Baglay, the Indian High Commissioner in Colombo, also participated in the parliamentary session. He highlighted the potential for strengthening bilateral ties through four key areas: food security, energy security, currency support, and long-term investment.
In response, Sri Lankan parliamentary Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena suggested the implementation of exchange programs through the parliamentary friendship association to further enhance relations.
The parliamentarians expressed gratitude for India's economic support during Sri Lanka's severe economic crisis last year. India extended assistance valued at over USD 4 billion, primarily contributing to essential imports and fuel procurement.
The economic turmoil resulting from foreign exchange shortages led to public protests in the island nation and contributed to the removal of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from office.
