New Delhi: India on Wednesday reported 71,365 fresh Covid cases in India, taking the total number of infections to 4,24,10,976.

According to the Health Ministry, the positivity rate fell to 4.5 per cent.

The top five states which have registered maximum cases are Kerala with 29,471 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 6,107 cases, Tamil Nadu with 4,519 cases, Karnataka with 4,452 cases and Rajasthan with 3,411 cases.

These five states accounted for 67.21 per cent of the new cases, with Kerala alone responsible for 41.3 per cent of the new cases.

The number of deaths climbed to 5,05,279 with 1,217 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

A total of 1,72,211 patients recovered in the last 24 hours, which brings the total recoveries to 4,10,12,869 across the country.

The active cases comprise 2.11 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 96.70 per cent, the ministry said.

A reduction of 1,02,063 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said that the impact of Covid will be felt for decades even as the spread of virus is slowing down across the world.

The WHO chief said that the impact will be felt among the most vulnerable groups and the longer the pandemic drags on, the impact would be worse.

"The impact of the Covid pandemic will be felt for decades, especially among the most vulnerable groups. The longer the pandemic drags on, the worse those impacts will be," Dr Tedros said.
