Hyderabad engineering student dies by suicide, alleges ragging by seniors
text_fieldsHyderabad: A 22-year-old engineering student at Siddharth Engineering College in Hyderabad was found dead in his hostel room on Monday morning, with initial reports pointing to alleged ragging and harassment by seniors.
The student, identified as Jadav Sai Teja, is said to have recorded a video before his death, in which he pleaded for help, claiming he was being beaten and extorted for money, reported NDTV. According to reports, he alleged that seniors had forced him to a bar, made him consume alcohol, and demanded he pay a bill of around Rs 10,000.
His family and lawyer, who travelled nearly 300 km overnight, reached the hostel and demanded a thorough probe into the circumstances of his death. A police case has been registered, and investigators are examining CCTV footage, the student’s video, and statements from hostel inmates and staff.
Authorities are also looking into whether the college’s anti-ragging committee had acted on any earlier complaints or failed to follow procedures.
The incident has sparked outrage, renewing concerns about campus safety and the effectiveness of anti-ragging measures in engineering institutions.
Sai Teja’s family has demanded justice, urging authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible. The investigation is ongoing.
