New Delhi: Cow vigilantes in Haryana's Faridabad chased in car a class 12 student, mistaking him for a cattle smuggler, and shot him dead.

Police arrested five people identified as Anil Kaushik, Varun, Krishna, Adesh, and Saurabh following the August 23 attack, according to NDTV.

The accused chased the car of the victim, Aryan Mishra, and his friends: Shanky and Harshit, for about 30 kilometers.

They spent time racing along Haryana's Gadhpuri on the Delhi-Agra National Highway.

The cow vigilantes set out after receiving information that some cattle smugglers were traveling in Renault Duster and Toyota Fortuner.

The accused who were waiting for cattle smugglers happened to see a Duster car at Patel Chowk and asked the driver, Harshit, to stop.

They did not stop the car as Shanky , who was in the car along with Aryan, had a rivalry with some other people and thought the goons sent by the group were chasing them.

The accused opened fire and a bullet hit Aryan, sitting in the passenger seat - near the neck. He was shot again even after the car stopped.

Seeing two women in the car, the accused found out they had shot wrong person and fled.

Aryan was rushed to a hospital where he died a day later.

It is reported that the weapon used by the accused was illegal.

The accused are in police custody and further investigation is underway.
