Kolkata: A fresh FIR has been registered against Sumit Roy, the absconding executive assistant of Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, police said on Sunday.

The new case, lodged at Debra Police Station in West Midnapore district, accuses Roy of duping people of several lakh rupees by promising them state government jobs during the previous Mamata Banerjee administration. Roy is currently absconding. Authorities have also issued a lookout notice to prevent him from leaving the country.

A district court in West Midnapore had earlier issued an arrest warrant against Roy in a separate alleged land grabbing case filed at Salboni Police Station. His name emerged in both matters following statements by former TMC MLA Sujoy Hazra, who was arrested earlier this month on corruption charges.

This month, a joint team from Salboni Police Station, Kolkata Police and Central Armed Police Forces conducted raids at Abhishek Banerjee’s Kalighat Road residence while searching for Roy, after mobile phone tower data last placed him near the address.

Abhishek Banerjee — nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — has been questioned several times in recent weeks by the West Bengal CID and the Enforcement Directorate. The ED has probed him in the multi-crore cash-for-school-jobs case, while the CID has questioned him over an alleged mismatch of legislators’ signatures and alleged inflammatory statements ahead of the state assembly polls.
