No alliance with Congress for Delhi Assembly polls: Kejriwal

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief Arvind Kejriwal has reiterated that his party will contest the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections independently, ruling out any alliance with the Congress.

Kejriwal stated that the national capital’s ruling party would fight the elections “on its own strength.” Addressing reports claiming that AAP and Congress were in the “final stages of agreement for an alliance,” he firmly denied the speculation.

“There is no possibility of any alliance with Congress,” Kejriwal asserted on social media platform X, putting an end to rumors about a potential collaboration between the two parties.

Both AAP and Congress are part of the Opposition INDIA bloc at the national level, which had sparked talks of a possible partnership for the Delhi Assembly elections. However, Kejriwal’s comments have made it clear that AAP intends to go solo in the state polls.

The Delhi Assembly elections are anticipated to take place in or before February, although the Election Commission has not announced the schedule yet.

Kejriwal had earlier ruled out any alliances for the Assembly polls during a statement on December 1. On that occasion, he reiterated AAP’s commitment to contesting the elections independently.

Reflecting on past alliances, Kejriwal acknowledged that AAP had partnered with Congress during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi. However, the alliance had been a failure, with the BJP winning all seven parliamentary seats in the national capital. The Aam Aadmi Party clarified at the time that its coalition with Congress was only intended for the general elections and would not extend to other polls.

The AAP has already announced 31 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the Kejriwal-led party had achieved a landslide victory, winning 62 of the 70 seats, while the BJP secured the remaining eight.
