Darrang Police Firing: Delegation raises the issue of police brutality, evictions with Assam CM

A delegation of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind and Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) had a detailed meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma on Sunday and raised the issue of police brutality and evictions of Muslims in Darrang district.

The delegation reiterated the demands to punish the police personnel involved in violence on displaced Muslims and to compensate those killed and injured by them. It also urged the CM to stop evictions and rehabilitate the people dislocated by the administration.

CM assured his help and asked the delegation to visit Sipajhar, where displaced families are sheltered, assess the requirements and tell him what immediate measures he could take. He requested the organisations to start relief work and assured the required support.

JIH Vice President S Ameenul Hasan, National Secretary Shafi Madni and SIO National President Salman Ahmad were part of the delegation.

On Monday, President of SIO Salman Ahmad visited the family of Moinul Haque, who was allegedly killed by Assam Police and offered them condolence. He also announced that SIO will sponsor the entire education of all three of his children.

Meanwhile, Indian Union Muslim League(IUML) leaders wrote letter to the Indian President, Prime Minister, Home Minister and Human Rights Chairman, urging immediate intervention over Assam's state-sponsored violence against its most vulnerable people. The letter demanded to bring those policemen who carry out such outright violation of human rights before the law.

On Sunday, The All Assam Minorities Students' Union (AAMSU), an influential students body representing both religious and linguistic minorities in Assam had demanded a thorough judicial inquiry to the violent incident which left two persons dead and over 20 injured including policemen during protests and subsequent police firing.

AAMSU also demanded a compensation of Rs. 10 lakhs for the deceased family and Rs. 5 lakhs for those injured. "Settlement of 6 bighas of land should be made immediately for the landless poor people living over there for decades with all the basic amenities," said Md Imtiaz Hussain General Secretary, AAMSU.

Earlier, on September 25, AIUDF Barpeta District Committee had organised a protest rally against the violent incident. The party also submitted a memorandum to Hon. Governor via DC Barpeta with 5 point demands including proper rehabilitation of the victims. AIUDF General Secretary and MLA from Jania Dr Hafiz Rafiqul Islam also warned of strong democratic protests in case the demands are not met within the stipulated time.
