New Delhi: Nallathamby Kalaiselvi, a senior scientist, has been chosen to serve as the first female Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), an association of 38 research institutions located all throughout the nation.

She is the current director of the CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI) in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, and is well recognised for her work on lithium-ion batteries.

Her appointment is for a period of two years with the day from the date of assumption of charge or till further orders, whichever is earlier, a personnel ministry order stated on Saturday.

In February 2019, Kalaiselvi became the first woman to lead the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CSIR-CECRI), shattering the glass ceiling.

She began her career in the same institute as a junior scientist.

Kalaiselvi attended a Tamil-medium school in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu. She is from the small city of Ambasamudhram.
