The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has warned that it may reconsider support to the Tamil Nadu government led by actor-politician Vijay if any faction of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam joins the ruling coalition.

Speaking to the media on Monday, the CPM said including AIADMK members in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government would go against the people’s mandate, which it said had rejected both the AIADMK and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The Left party also said the AIADMK’s entry into the coalition would contradict TVK’s promise of clean governance.

The CPM said it was currently supporting the TVK government because Tamil Nadu was not prepared for another election, and to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party from gaining power through Governor’s rule.

Vijay’s TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly in the May 4 election, falling 10 seats short of a majority. The party later secured support from the Indian National Congress, which won five seats, along with backing from Left parties, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and the Indian Union Muslim League.

During the trust vote held on May 13, Vijay received support from 144 lawmakers, including 24 AIADMK MLAs who defied party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami and voted in favour of the government despite the party whip.

The rebellion has exposed divisions within the AIADMK, with the party reportedly preparing action against the rebel MLAs under the anti-defection law.

The CPM and VCK clarified that while they continue to remain aligned with the DMK politically, they decided to support Vijay’s government from outside to avoid a fresh election and keep the BJP and AIADMK out of power in the state.
