India logged 13,596 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest daily rise in the last eight months or 230 days, the Health Ministry's data showed. At least 166 people lost their lives to the pandemic in the last 24 hours taking the total death count to 4,52,290.

The top five states which registered maximum cases are Kerala with 7,555 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 1,715 cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,218 cases, West Bengal with 624 cases and Odisha with 443 cases.

These five states reported 84.99% of the new cases with Kerala alone responsible for 55.57% cases.

Maximum casualties were reported in Kerala with 74 deaths, followed by Maharashtra with 29 daily deaths.

Meanwhile, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, World Health Organisation (WHO) chief scientist, on Sunday said the WHO technical advisory group will meet on October 26 to consider approval for India's homegrown Covaxin.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 3,34,39,331, while the case fatality rate was 1.33 per cent, the ministry said.

The weekly positivity rate (1.37% per cent), has been less than 3 per cent for the last 115 days and the daily positivity rate (1.37 per cent) has been less than 3 per cent for 49 days.

The daily positivity rate, which refers to the number of people testing positive out of every 100 tests, stood at 1.37 per cent this morning - it has been less than 3 per cent for the last 49 days.

Over 97.79 crore Covid vaccine doses have been administered in the country under the nationwide vaccination drive.

India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.
