Congress attacks Modi over 'moral cowardice' after Netanyahu claims India is Israel's sole global ally
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Congress party launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, accusing him of "extreme moral cowardice" for his unwavering support of Israel. The opposition party stated that Modi's stance is a "betrayal" of India’s core values and remains deeply unacceptable to millions of Indian citizens.
The fierce criticism follows reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a conference in the West Bank that Israel faces global delegitimisation everywhere "except in India".
Responding to the remarks, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh clarified that Netanyahu's assessment applies strictly to the Prime Minister’s political ecosystem rather than the nation as a whole.
In a detailed post on X, Ramesh criticised Modi for maintaining total silence on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. He highlighted that the Prime Minister has failed to condemn the Israeli military actions in Gaza, the bombing of Lebanon, and the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
Ramesh also pointed out that Modi had warmly embraced Israeli leadership just two days before Israel and the USA launched heavy aerial bombardments on Iran on 28 February 2026. Furthermore, he noted that India has failed to condemn the targeted assassinations of the Iranian head of state and other senior leaders.
"Mr Modi has stood out as Mr Netanyahu’s strongest supporter," Ramesh alleged, claiming that Israel’s interests are now deeply embedded within the "Modani" corporate conglomerate. He concluded that this unconditional support is "shameful and unacceptable to crores of Indians."
