Comedian Vir Das show cancelled after Right Wing protest in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The protest from Right Wing groups has forced Popular stand-up comedian Vir Das to cancel his performance which was scheduled to be held on November 20 in Hyderabad.

Earlier last week in Bengaluru too witnessed his show being cancelled at the last minute over the same threats on him for his alleged anti-India comments.

The show was scheduled as part of his India tour, and the organisers have confirmed the calling off of the show, however, without a reason.

The Hindu Janajagruti Samiti threatened to continue its protest against Das' show until he apologises for the anti-India comments that he made during a show in the US last year.

His show titled 'I come from two Indias' last year in the US irked the right-wing groups who termed it as an insult to the country on an international platform, for which he should render an apology.

"Das should apologise for his statement made against India in the US. If we don't protest against his statement, then it would mean that we support what he said," Ramesh Shinde, the leader of the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti said told the news agency PTI. "If he apologises, then the issue is over," Shinde added.

In the alleged show he did in the US, he can be heard talking about some of the key issues that India is facing like the battle against COVID-19, incidents of rapes, a crackdown against comedians to the farmers' protests.

Das had issued a statement on the controversy saying, "The comments in I come from two Indias weren't intended to insult the country. A section on Twitter posted clips and pictures from his monologue, specifically the part where I said I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them during the night."
