Centre announces free residential education for Scheduled Caste students

Noida: Virendra Kumar, the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, announced free education to students belonging to the category of Scheduled caste in selected residential schools.

Students will be selected through National Entrance Test for Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SRESHTA).

Many students were awarded scholarships under the scheme. The government observes that every student with a calibre of learning has the right to receive a quality education.

"We want to give them the same exposure that any other student studying in a good school would get," added the minister while detailing on the mission.

17-year-old Anjana shared her views on the lack of quality education received in government schools.

"There were no science teachers in any nearby government schools, and also no lab facility." Anjana is now enrolled in Mahamaya Balika Inter College through the scheme.

1300 seats for 9th grade and 1,700 seats for 11th grade are reserved in 177 private schools by the government. All the funds including the tuition and mess fee will get covered in the scheme. Only students from families with an income below Rs 2.5 lakh per annum will be considered while registering for the scheme.

The income of the families of the students applying for the scheme should not be over Rs 2.5 lakh per annum.

The National Testing Agency will conduct nationwide computer-based tests to select students based on the merit system.
