Bombay HC defers Imran Khan hearing as he has 2 days to leave India
text_fieldsMumbai: The Bombay High Court on Monday postponed actor Imran Khan’s plea challenging the Foreigners Regional Registration Office’s (FRRO) order directing him to leave India, even as the notice gives him until October 28 to exit the country, The Indian Express reported.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Advait M Sethna will hear the matter on Tuesday, October 27, at 3 pm. Senior advocate Venkatesh Dhond, representing Khan, sought the adjournment after consulting Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who raised no objection.
The FRRO issued the Leave India Notice (LIN) on October 14, alleging that Khan violated the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, by participating in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar near Mumbai’s August Kranti Marg on October 10. Khan was detained at the protest site along with other participants.
Khan has challenged the notice before the High Court, seeking its cancellation and protection against coercive action, including deportation. His legal team has argued that he has lived in India since the age of two and has no criminal antecedents.
The case escalated after the FRRO issued a show-cause notice on October 17, indicating that Khan’s Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) registration could be cancelled.
The action followed a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan had violated the law. Police subsequently forwarded an FIR described as unproven, after which the FRRO issued the notice.
With the hearing scheduled just a day before the departure deadline, the court’s next move could prove crucial for the actor.
