Assam govt sets up judicial commission to probe Zubeen Garg's death
text_fieldsGuwahati: The Assam government has constituted a one-man judicial commission to investigate the death of renowned singer-composer Zubeen Garg, according to an official order issued by the Political Department.
The commission, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, has been tasked with probing the facts and circumstances surrounding Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19. It will also examine whether there were any lapses, acts of omission or commission, or negligence by any individual, authority, or institution in connection with the incident.
Additionally, the panel will ascertain if any external factors, including the possibility of foul play, conspiracy, or unlawful acts, contributed to or were linked with Garg’s demise. The commission has been directed to submit its report within six months, the order stated.
The notification, shared by the Chief Minister’s Office on X late Friday, comes amid ongoing investigations by the Assam CID, which is already probing the case following over 60 FIRs filed across the state.
Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea in Singapore, where he had gone to attend the 4th edition of the NorthEast India Festival, organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company.
So far, the festival organiser, Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, and two band members, Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta have been arrested and placed under 14-day police remand in connection with the case.
