Assam government bans gatherings, noise and protests near Raj Bhawan
text_fieldsGuwahati: The Central Guwahati Police District has imposed restrictions on public gatherings, protests and disruptive activities within a five-kilometer radius of Raj Bhawan, the official residence of the Governor of Assam, citing security and safety concerns, officials said on Friday.
The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Amitabh Basumatary, APS, took effect immediately and will remain in force for two months. Officials said the step was necessary to preserve peace and safeguard the sanctity of the high-security zone surrounding Raj Bhawan.
“Raj Bhawan is the official residence of the Hon’ble Governor of Assam, a location of utmost importance requiring heightened security and a tranquil environment to ensure the smooth functioning of essential government duties,” the directive stated.
Under the order, protests, rallies, demonstrations and other public gatherings have been prohibited in the restricted zone. The use of loudspeakers, fireworks, crackers or any noise-producing devices has also been banned to maintain a disturbance-free environment.
The directive further restricts unauthorized vehicular or individual movement in the area without prior approval, while construction or activities deemed a potential threat to peace or security have also been barred.
Police have warned of strict penal action against violators, with contraventions to be dealt with under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) Act.
Security officials said the move was intended to prevent disturbances around Raj Bhawan, which often witnesses public movements and events. The restrictions come at a time when Guwahati has seen an increase in demonstrations by various groups over political and social issues.
With the order in place, the vicinity of Raj Bhawan will remain under tight security surveillance for the next two months.
