Anti-Gyanesh Kumar protests: more Fraternity leaders detained
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Delhi Police have intensified their crackdown on protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the withdrawal of the controversial Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, detaining several prominent Fraternity Movement leaders.
Those taken into custody include national president Ramees E.K., national general secretary Lubaib Basheer, Kerala state president Naeem Gafoor N.K. and national executive committee member Thashreef K.P.
The latest detentions follow the earlier custody of Fraternity Movement national general secretary Mohd Alfauz Azmi and Asif Iqbal Tanha amid preparations for protests in the national capital.
The detained leaders have vowed to resist the crackdown, insisting that arrests and state repression will not silence their movement. They have pledged to continue street protests until Gyanesh Kumar resigns and the disputed SIR process is withdrawn.
The agitation has intensified over opposition allegations that the SIR exercise has led to widespread deletion of voters’ names, raising concerns about electoral fairness and the Election Commission’s credibility.
Student and youth organisations, alongside opposition parties, have stepped up demonstrations in the national capital. Despite stringent police restrictions at Delhi’s borders and metro stations intended to prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar, activists have continued taking to the streets.
The latest arrests have further heightened tensions as the movement presses ahead with its demands.
