Air India crew member held for smuggling 1.7 kg gold at Chennai Airport
text_fieldsChennai: Authorities at Chennai airport on Tuesday said that a cabin crew member of Air India has been arrested for helping a passenger smuggle gold.
Officials intercepted the cabin crew member and the passenger when they arrived at Chennai airport from Dubai on Air India Flight on Sunday and they have been remanded under judicial custody, according to NDTV.
It is reported that the cabin crew member helped smuggling 1.7 kg 24-carat gold.
The customs department stated that the passenger handed over the gold to the cabin crew member while on flight.
Officials reportedly said that a search led to the discovery of gold in ‘compound form, concealed in the undergarments of the cabin crew’.
In another incident customs officials at the Chennai Airport arrested a Kenyan woman for having ingested 90 capsules containing cocaine worth ₹ 14.2 crore.
The woman arrived from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on December 7.
The customs department said that based on specific intelligence the Air Intelligence Unit intercepted a Kenyan female passenger who arrived in Chennai from Addis Ababa by Ethiopian Airlines on December 7, adding that ‘On search of her person, she egested 90 cylindrical hyperdense objects with medical assistance’.
The customs department said that ‘These objects tested positive for cocaine, a psychotropic substance covered under the NDPS Act, 1985.’
Authorities reportedly recovered a total of 1.4 kg of cocaine from her possession. The woman has been sent to judicial custody.
