Actor Raj Babbar gets 2-year jail term in 1996 assault case
text_fieldsLucknow: A court in Uttar Pradesh handed out two-year sentence to Congress leader and actor Raj Babbar for assaulting a polling officer 26 years ago.
Raj Babbar was present in the court when the verdict was pronounced in the case lodged in Wazirganj police station on May 2, 1996.
The court also slapped on him a fine of Rs 8,500, after the actor was convicted of obstruction of government work and assault.
Back in 1996, Raj Babbar was contesting Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow , as part of Samajwadi Party, when he entered in argument with a polling officer, before causing assault.
He was found guilty of roughing up a government officer but was bailed out at the time.
Raj Babbar and Arvind Yadav were charged with police complaint involving sections 143, 332, 353, 323, 504, 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Apart from the Representation of the People Act, the charge sheet was filed in court under the Criminal Law Amendment Act.
Babbar was later convicted of voluntarily causing hurt to stop a public servant from performing his duty and three other offences, according to India Today.
