2020 Delhi riots: Court grants Sharjeel Imam interim bail
text_fieldsNew Delhi: A Delhi court on Monday granted interim bail to Sharjeel Imam in connection with the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 North-East Delhi riots, Live Law reported.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Courts allowed Imam to attend his brother’s wedding and granted him interim bail for ten days, from March 20 to March 30.
Imam is among several accused booked in the alleged larger conspiracy behind the communal violence that broke out in the national capital during the last week of February 2020. The case has been registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
According to investigators, the accused — many of them student activists who organised protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 — were involved in planning the alleged conspiracy linked to the riots.
Others named in the case include Tahir Hussain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Safoora Zargar, Devangana Kalita, and Natasha Narwal, among others.
Some of the accused have already secured bail in the case at different stages, while the trial in the larger conspiracy case is still ongoing.
