2012 Pune blasts accused Bunty Jahagirdar shot dead in Maharashtra
text_fieldsAhilyanagar: Bunty Jahagirdar, a key accused in the 2012 Pune serial blasts case, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Shrirampur town, Ahilyanagar district, on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 2 pm on Borawake College Road. Jahagirdar, aged in his mid-50s, was returning from a burial ground on a two-wheeler accompanied by another person when he was intercepted by two individuals on a motorcycle. The assailants opened fire, inflicting critical injuries.
Jahagirdar was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his wounds shortly after admission.
Ahilyanagar Superintendent of Police, Somnath Gharge, confirmed the death and stated that a manhunt has been launched. "The motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained. Multiple teams have been formed to probe the case, and the investigation is on," Gharge said.
Jahagirdar had been out on bail since 2023 in connection with the blasts case. According to police records, he had a significant criminal history in the Ahilyanagar district, with multiple cases registered against him involving murder, bodily offences, and criminal intimidation.
He was originally arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for his alleged involvement in the Jangli Maharaj Road serial blasts. That attack, which took place on August 1, 2012, saw four coordinated low-intensity explosions rock the heart of Pune, targeting busy locations near Balgandharva Theatre, a Dena Bank branch, a McDonald’s outlet, and Garware Bridge.
