Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the director behind the 2019 blockbuster "Kabir Singh," has hit back at actor Adil Hussain for his recent remarks about the film being misogynistic.

Hussain, who had a cameo role in the film as the college dean, expressed regret over his involvement in "Kabir Singh" during a recent appearance on the AP Podcast.

In the interview, Hussain admitted that "Kabir Singh" is the only film in his career that he regrets being a part of.

He disclosed that he had accepted the role without reading the script or watching the original Telugu film "Arjun Reddy," on which "Kabir Singh" is based. Hussain recounted his experience watching the film, saying, "I went to see the movie (Kabir Singh) in Delhi and I could not take it after 20 minutes, I just walked out. And I regret it till today. The only movie that I have regretted doing is that film (Kabir Singh) because I think it is misogynistic. It made me feel very small as a human being."

Responding to Hussain's comments, Vanga took to X [formerly Twitter] to share a biting retort. He wrote, "Ur 'belief' in 30 art films didn't get as much fame to u as ur 'regret' of 1 BLOCKBUSTER film did. I regret casting u knowing that ur greed is bigger than ur passion. NOW I'll save U from the shame by replacing Ur face with AI help Now smile properly," and included a link to Hussain's interview.

While Hussain criticized the film's portrayal of misogyny, he also defended Vanga's freedom of expression.

Hussain stated, "I feel everybody has a right to make a film the way they want. I would defend his (Sandeep Reddy Vanga) freedom to make a film. But I disagree with him completely. I think a film like Kabir Singh celebrates something which is not beneficial for society. It legitimises male misogyny and violence against anybody and does not have to be a woman."

Hussain further shared his embarrassment over his involvement in the film, mentioning that he couldn't even recommend it to his wife due to its content.

In a previous statement from 2019, Vanga had praised Hussain's acting skills, expressing his certainty about casting him in the Hindi remake of "Arjun Reddy." Alongside Shahid Kapoor in the lead role, Kiara Advani also starred in "Kabir Singh," which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year.
