Popular playback singer Pankaj Udhas, celebrated for memorable hits like 'Chitthi aayi hai', has passed away at the age of 72 after battling a prolonged illness, as confirmed by his family.

The Udhas family released a statement expressing their grief, stating, "With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26 February due to a prolonged illness."

He breathed his last around 11 am at Breach Candy hospital, according to a family source cited by news agency PTI.

The last rites of the legendary singer will be conducted on Tuesday.

Pankaj Udhas left an indelible mark as a playback singer in Hindi films such as "Naam," "Saajan," and "Mohra." His repertoire includes timeless ghazals like 'Chandani Raat Mein,' 'Na Kajre Ki Dhaar,' 'Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein,' 'Ek Taraf Uska Ghar,' and 'Thodi Thodi Piya Karo.'

Pankaj Udhas' illustrious career began in the late 1970s, and he quickly rose to prominence as one of the most captivating and soulful voices in the realm of ghazals. A breakthrough came with his album "Aahat" in 1980, which included timeless gems like "Chitthi Aayi Hai" and "Mujhse Bhala Yeh Kajal Tera."
