Kajol cites ‘partial deafness, selective amnesia’ as secret to long marriage with Ajay Devgn

Ajay Devgn and Kajol, one of Bollywood’s most well-known couples, have often reflected on what keeps their marriage strong. The two first met in 1995 and developed a romantic relationship during the filming of Ishq in 1997, eventually getting married in 1999.

Despite being in the public eye, they have maintained a down-to-earth relationship, often describing their bond as more friendly than traditionally romantic. According to Kajol, this relaxed, friendship-like dynamic might be one of the key reasons their relationship has lasted.

In a recent conversation with Mashable India, Kajol noted that their contrasting personalities have played a major role in their lasting connection. She remarked that their differences have likely helped them stay together, suggesting that if they had been too similar, the relationship might not have endured this long. Ajay, a man of little words, has now been married to Kajol for 26 years.

Kajol has shared insights into how she and Ajay Devgn maintain balance in their relationship despite their different personalities and busy schedules. She explained that adapting to each other's energy is crucial, joking that a successful marriage often requires what she called “partial deafness and selective amnesia.”

According to her, it’s important to occasionally overlook certain things a partner says or does in order to maintain peace and understanding.

She added, “We don’t have date nights and all that. Hum yeh sab nahi karte hai (We don’t do all this). We mostly have family time because it is very rare that we spend time at home together. Either he is working or travelling or I am working or travelling. So whenever we find some time, we try and stay at home with everybody else. No date nights as such,” as reported by the Indian Express.

When asked about the nature of their bond, Kajol acknowledged that after so many years of marriage, their relationship is more companionable than romantic. She lightheartedly remarked that it's been too long for her to still be blushing while speaking about her husband.

In an earlier interview with Instant Bollywood, Kajol also spoke about how she copes with Ajay’s strong work ethic. She admitted that while there are moments she appreciates his being away on long shoots, there are also times she wishes he were home for certain occasions. Over time, she said, she has learned to accept his deep passion for his work. The couple are parents to two children, Nysa and Yug.
