Los Angeles: Hollywoood actor Leonardo DiCaprio won the Oscar for the Best Actor for his film "The Revenant" at the 88th Academy Awards ceremony held here on Sunday. "Spotlight" won the Oscar for Best Picture at the Academy Awards ceremony.

It defeated "The Revenant", which grabbed the Oscars for other top honours like Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Directing.

Apart from getting one of the top honours, "Spotlight" was also named Best Original Screenplay.

The Tom McCarthy directorial takes you back to 2001 when the journalists of The Boston Globe's Spotlight team began investigating Father John Geoghan, accused of molesting more than 80 boys.

As they dig deeper and acknowledge their paper's own failings, the team uncovers a conspiracy of lawyers and government officials who helped the Boston Archdiocese hide the pedophilia of many priests and deny justice to the victims.

In his acceptance speech, DiCaprio said: "Thank you all so very much. Thank you to the Academy. Thank to all of you in this room. I have to congratulate the other nominees."

DiCaprio was contending with Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo"), Matt Damon ("The Martian"), Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs"), and Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl").

For his win, DiCaprio thanked director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu -- who also won an Oscar in the Best Director category -- for helming the semi-biographical western drama, which was inspired by true events and narrates a story of man's epic adventure of survival and revenge, including how he survives an attack by a bear.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" lifted Oscars for the Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 88th Academy Awards.
