'My wife is wonderful, I love staring at her': Anand Mahindra

New Delhi: Against the opinion by Narayana Murthy, the founder of Infosys, of 70-hour work weeks, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said that he believes in quality of work rather than quantity, batting for an ideal work-life balance. Speaking at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025 in New Delhi, Mahindra said that the discourse emphasizing the quantity of work hours is wrong, Asian News International.
He also said that he does not use social media as a space to find friends because he is lonely but as a business tool.
"My wife is wonderful, I love staring at her. I spend more time," asserting that he is sufficiently engaged with his family.
"I have huge respect for Narayana Murthy (founder of Infosys) and others. So let me not get this wrong, of course. But I have to say something, I think this debate is in the wrong direction," ANI quoted Mahindra.
He said that his point is that people have to focus on the quality of work instead of quantity. It is not about 48 hours, 40, 70 or even 90 hours of work a week, he said, adding that what matters is the output of the work.
He asked, "What output are you doing even if it's 10 hours? You can change the world in 10 hours," ANI quoted.
There are several countries that are experimenting with or adopting a four-day work week. He said he always believed that there must be leaders in companies to make wise decisions and choices. He added that those who make decisions must have minds exposed to holistic thinking and be open to input from around the world.
He said that he is for liberal arts and advised that even if one is an engineer or MBA, one must study art and culture. According to him, people make better decisions when they have a whole brain and are informed about arts and culture.
“That's when you'll make a good decision," Mahindra said.
