Will Smith resigns from the Academy after Chris Rock slap

Los Angeles: Will Smith has tendered his resignation from the body that awards the Oscars after attacking presenter Chris Rock during the weekend ceremony, a statement said Friday.

"I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate," the actor wrote in a statement carried by multiple outlets.

"My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.

"The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home."

At the Oscars ceremony last Sunday, Smith strode up to the stage after Rock made a joke about the appearance of Jada, his wife's closely cropped head, then smacked Rock across the face.

Less than an hour later, Smith gave a tearful speech on stage as he accepted the best actor award for his role in "King Richard."

Jada Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a condition that causes hair to fall out.

The actor in his statement also acknowledged that his actions took away from the other nominees and winners of the night. "I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film."

Meanwhile, Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists., SAG-AFTRA released a statement after the Oscars incident saying Smith could also face disciplinary action from his guild.

"We have been in contact with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and ABC about this incident and will work to ensure this behaviour is appropriately addressed. SAG-AFTRA does not comment on any pending member disciplinary process," the statement said.
