Will impose fine on wearing headscarf: French Presidential candidate

Paris: The far-right presidential candidate in France, Marine Le Pen, promised that she would impose a fine on Muslims who wear headscarves in public if elected to power, Agence France-Presse reported.

Speaking to RTL radio, Le Pen explained how her pledge to ban the headscarf in all public spaces would be implemented, saying it would be enforced by police in the same way as seatbelt-wearing in cars.

Speaking to RTL radio, Le Pen said that she would enforce the ban on the public by mobilizing police, similar to how wearing seatbelts in cars were enforced in the country. She said that the police are very much able to implement it when it is implemented.

She further said that she would use referendums to avoid anyone putting forward constitutional challenges to the laws she is going to implement in the country if she is elected, citing they are discriminatory or infringing on personal freedoms.

Earlier, there were bans on religious symbols in schools and a complete covering of faces in public places. These bans were allowed on the basis that it is applicable to all citizens and in specific settings.

Meanwhile, Le Pen has reduced addressing her anti-immigration narrative during her campaigns this year but focused on household spending. According to polls, this helped much, putting her closer to power.
