Washington: US Vice President JD Vance has defended President Donald Trump’s agreement with Iran and strongly came down on Israeli political figures who have opposed the deal, arguing that the United States remains Israel’s most significant international supporter, The Guardian reported.
The agreement, reached this week to bring an end to the conflict with Iran, has faced criticism from sections of both the American and Israeli political establishments. Opponents contend that the arrangement does not adequately address Iran’s missile capabilities, offers no clear mechanism for dismantling its nuclear infrastructure and places constraints on Israel’s military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Responding to reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unhappy with the agreement, Vance said he had not personally heard such concerns from Netanyahu. However, he expressed disapproval of members of the Israeli cabinet who have publicly criticised the deal and directed attacks at Trump.
Vance argued that Israel should carefully consider its relationship with Washington, describing Trump as the country’s most supportive world leader at a time when it faces mounting international challenges. He also highlighted the extent of American military support for Israel, noting that a substantial share of the defensive systems protecting the country has been produced in the United States and funded through American taxpayer money.
The United States currently provides Israel with around $4 billion in military assistance annually, while discussions are underway between the two countries on a new aid arrangement.
According to Vance, Israel’s difficulties do not stem from the US president. He suggested that Israeli officials who view Trump as a problem are failing to recognise the broader realities confronting the country and the importance of continued American backing.
