Washington: In the US, where the presidential elections are due in three months, Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris is in the lead over her Republic Party counterpart Donald Trump- the controversial ex-President- at three crucial swing states of Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan, NDTV reported.
In recent polls conducted by the New York Times and Siena College on August 5 and August 9, Harris led by four percentage points with 50% to 46% support among the 1,973 registered voters in the three states.
It was in the week when Kamala Harris named Tim Walz as her running mate, and the polls were conducted. Walz is the governor of Minnesota. The NDTV report states that the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 4.8 per cent points in Michigan, plus or minus 4.2 per cent in Pennsylvania and plus or minus 4.3 per cent in Wisconsin. This was a remarkable shift from previous surveys when the Democratic candidate was Joe Biden. Then, Trump was tied to or leading the incumbent, President Biden.
Following concerns about Biden’s cognitive well-being and fitness to govern, Biden stepped aside from running for president and endorsed incumbent Vice President Kamala Harris as a Democratic candidate. Though anything can happen before November 5, the election day, Democrats are enthusiastic about Harris’ candidacy, being relieved after Biden stepped aside.
According to NDTV, voters in Pennsylvania see Harris as more intelligent and temperamentally fit to govern and therefore, a significant bump in favourability, up to 10 points, has been noticed in the state. America’s electoral college voting system considers Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Michigan crucial for the Indian-origin Vice President and for her party to stay in power.
