Bern: Switzerland is preparing to host a fresh round of diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran following the memorandum of understanding reached between the two countries to halt hostilities in West Asia. The talks are expected to focus on unresolved issues, including a possible nuclear agreement and the implementation of commitments outlined in the interim deal.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is travelling to Switzerland for the discussions, while Jared Kushner, senior adviser and son-in-law of President Donald Trump, has already arrived, according to international media reports. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to travel to Switzerland, although reports indicate that his participation will depend on developments along the Lebanon-Israel border.
The negotiations are expected to take place at the Bürgenstock resort in central Switzerland. Talks originally scheduled for Friday were postponed after renewed fighting between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon raised doubts over the diplomatic process. Preparations resumed after a new ceasefire was announced following mediation efforts involving the United States, Qatar and Iran.
Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani has already arrived in Switzerland and held discussions with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis. Qatar has reiterated its support for efforts aimed at securing a lasting political settlement through dialogue.
The reported 14-point memorandum calls for an immediate halt to military operations across multiple fronts, including Lebanon. It also addresses maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief for Iran, the release of frozen assets and mechanisms to facilitate Iranian oil exports. The framework provides a 60-day period for technical negotiations on disputed issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme.
Switzerland has confirmed its readiness to host the talks involving the United States, Iran, Qatar and Pakistan, with an official date expected to be announced soon.
