Karachi: Protests erupted in Pakistan over Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's death in US-Israeli airstrikes, with demonstrators vandalising and torching the US consulate in Karachi, leaving six dead in clashes.
Security officials used tear gas and baton charges to disperse the protesters. Six people were killed in the firing that ensued. More than 30 others were injured. Police surgeon Dr. Summayya Saeed confirmed six bodies arrived at Karachi's Civil Hospital. The death toll may rise.
Protesters gathered outside the consulate and later breached security barriers to enter the premises. They used sticks and stones to vandalise the consulate. Footage of the incident has emerged. Security agencies have now cordoned off the area.
Meanwhile, authorities have not yet issued any official statements regarding the circumstances of the firing. Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar has sought details from the Karachi Additional Inspector General of Police. He has also ordered enhanced security measures at sensitive areas.
