Washington: US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group to accelerate its deployment to the Middle East, following a discussion with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. This move comes as tensions escalate in the region after the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, with Israel being blamed for both attacks.

The Pentagon also confirmed that the USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine, has been sent to the region, marking a significant step in bolstering US military presence amid fears of a large-scale retaliation by Iran and Hezbollah. The US has been enhancing its military posture in the Middle East to strengthen Israeli defenses, including deploying additional fighter jets and Navy warships.

Austin reiterated the US commitment to defending Israel, emphasizing the increased military capabilities in the region. The situation remains tense as both the US and Israel prepare for potential retaliatory strikes following the high-profile assassinations, which have raised concerns of a broader conflict in the Middle East.
