Ukraine gives Britain access to ‘Avengers’ AI database used in Russia war

Ukraine has given Britain access to its “Avengers” artificial intelligence database, which contains battlefield information collected during the war with Russia, making the UK the first country outside Ukraine to receive access, according to The Independent.

The agreement was announced during British Prime Minister Andy Burnham's visit to Kyiv on Monday.

The Avengers platform gathers information from thousands of cameras and sensors deployed across the Ukrainian battlefield. It tracks military equipment and personnel, including tanks, artillery systems, air defence equipment, soldiers and drones such as Shahed drones and reconnaissance UAVs.

The data is processed at the Avengers Lab and used to train artificial intelligence models. Britain is expected to use the technology and Ukraine's battlefield experience to develop AI-based security systems.

The first UK-Ukraine project will focus on AI sensors designed to improve protection around military bases. The countries will also work on low-power AI chips that could allow machines to operate for longer periods in difficult conditions.

British officials said the technology could eventually have civilian applications, including protecting airports, prisons, railway systems and energy facilities.

During his Kyiv visit, Burnham said Britain would continue supporting Ukraine and called for greater pressure on Russia. He also urged increased supplies of interceptor missiles to help Ukraine defend against Russian attacks.

The UK also agreed to declassify blueprints for British-made components used in France's Scalp missile, which is similar to the Storm Shadow and has been used by Ukraine against targets in Russia.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticised Britain's actions, accusing London of “adding fuel to the fire” and seeking to prevent progress in peace efforts.

The agreement comes as Britain and Ukraine expand cooperation on defence technology and seek to apply lessons from the war to future military and security systems.
