Sydney: Australia's largest mosque, Lakemba in Sydney, received a third threat letter Wednesday—eve of Ramadan—featuring a pig drawing and a handwritten vow to "kill the Muslim Community," per Australian Broadcasting Corporation reports.
Lebanese Muslim Association Secretary Gamel Kheir, who runs the mosque, noted community unease: "We’ve had so many inquiries about [whether] it’s safe to go to prayer." Following the incident, New South Wales police launched an investigation.
Prior incidents included a February letter showing the mosque ablaze and a January missive targeting Middle Eastern, First Nations communities, and politicians—a 70-year-old man was charged in connection with the incident.
The association requested heightened security, including more guards, CCTV, and funding. Kheir praised police cooperation and increased presence but said it won't fully resolve the issue.
NSW Premier Chris Minns condemned the threats, stressing government duty to protect all: "I want to make it clear that the NSW Police and the government are there for everybody, to protect your way of life, to ensure that you can go about your religious practices and you can be with your family and community at this time."
