Khartoum: Al-Jazeera on Sunday said that Al-Kabbashi, its bureau chief in Sudan, was arrested by security forces, Associated Press (AP) reports. The Qatar based satellite news network said on Twitter that the Sudanese troops raided the home of the Jazeera head.
The incident comes a day after security forces fire ammunition and tear gas to disperse protesters who denounced the military's tightening hold in the country. At least five lost their lives, and several were injured after the army opened the attack, activists said.
Five people lost their lives during pro-democracy protests in Sudan on Saturday as police fired into the crowds of demonstrators in cities across the country. The military coup on October 25 has drawn widespread international condemnation. General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan was named as head of the council on Thursday. The coup leader had already dissolved the civilian arm of the government's power-sharing agreement, arrested civilian leaders, and declared a state of emergency last month.
The Associated Press reported that Al-Jazeera did not elaborate on Al-Kabbashi's detention, and Sudani officials couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
