‘Stopped 8 wars’: Trump again claims he prevented India-Pakistan war

New Delhi: United States President Donald Trump has again asserted that he “stopped eight wars,” including an alleged conflict between India and Pakistan, while addressing the media after a bilateral meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Oval Office.

Responding to a question from reporters, Trump said, “I’ve stopped actually eight wars. I have another one to go with Putin. I’m a little surprised that Putin has taken longer than I thought, but we stopped India and Pakistan. I could go through the list; you know the list better than I do. I’m very proud and I stopped one that was almost ready to start again.”

He added that many of these peace efforts unfolded “right here in the Oval Office,” either by phone or during meetings with visiting leaders who “signed their peace deals” in the White House. Trump did not name the country he claimed was “ready to start” another conflict.

The US President first made this claim on May 10, when he announced a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, saying he had prevented the two nations from going to war after a “long night” of talks mediated by Washington. Since then, he has repeated the assertion more than 50 times.

During an October 28 address in South Korea ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit Trump again said he used trade pressure specifically, a threat of a 250% tariff on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to defuse tensions.

India has consistently rejected any suggestion of third-party intervention in its disputes with Pakistan. Pakistan, however, has repeatedly praised Trump’s claims, with Sharif even nominating him for the Nobel Pe‘Stopped Eight Wars’: Trump Again Claims He Prevented India-Pakistan Warace Prize for “stopping the war” between the two countries.
