Solution to Palestine issue imperative: League of Arab States chief

Cairo: Finding a solution to the Palestinian issue is imperative to establish peace and lasting cooperation in the Middle East, League of Arab States Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said, Arab News reported.

Gheit was addressing a session at the Ninth Baku International Forum on the future of the Middle East. He said that a solution to the issue requires Israel's commitment, honouring "relevant international resolutions, to return to June 4, 1967, lines, and to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state," Arab News quoted.

He impressed that no framework of regional cooperation will stay intact if it does not address Palestine or respect its people. He expressed his serious concern that the interest in the Palestine issue has gone down from the priorities of the international community.

There will be no prosperous future for the Middle East if Palestinian people's rights are neglected and ignored, he told an audience that included ex-Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak.

Further, he said that it is impossible to accept one Israeli state with two nations. He concluded that his advice to Israel was to settle the issue immediately.
