Kharkiv: In two separate attacks by Russia in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, at least ten people lost their lives and injured 25. Those who died include a pregnant woman, Reuters reported, citing local officials’ account on Sunday.
This was the latest among a series of attacks in the northeast region in recent weeks. When the first strike on Sunday killed five and wounded 16 at a recreation area outside Kharkiv city, the second strike killed another five and injured nine in two villages in the Kupiansk district.
It is learned that Russian forces shelled the two villages with a self-propelled rocket launcher.
Kharkiv city Mayor Ihor Terekhovsaid that there were explosions heard in the city around noon, and two Russian missiles hit the recreation centre where people were relaxing.
Reuters was told by reporters that a powerful blast hit the recreation centre, and a second blast happened some 15 to 20 minutes later.
Following the attack, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky once again appealed to his Western allies for more supplies of air defence systems to defend Kharkiv as well as other cities.
He said on the Telegram app that the world can stop Russian terror but only by overcoming the political will among leaders.
He said that if Kyiv were to be supplied with two Patriots air defence systems, it would make a fundamental difference. He added that more air support for other cities and sufficient support for soldiers on the frontline would ensure Russia’s defeat.
Ukraine accused Russia of the “double tap” attack or striking a target once again after a small interval of minutes.
